Adapt or Die

Woolworths

For many companies and individuals the rise of the Internet and the use of the web to market and promote oneself has caught them off guard. In more recent years the adoption of online purchases has marked the death knell for the high street retailer that has failed to keep abreast. Many companies have had to invest huge sums of money to employ specialist talent to devise and develop an online strategy for their Businesses. Many have paid extortionate rates to have this work carried out.
At the same time many individuals have invested in themselves to learn the skills needed to properly build and promote websites and have quickly gotten to grips with the many ways that social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter allow Business to engage with their customers.

Any Business which fails to acknowledge the capabilities of these strategies is doing more than an injustice to themselves and already many Companies who have failed to adopt these newer marketing methods have fallen by the wayside. There is now a vast array of information and services available that enable anyone to build and promote their websites and to engage with their customers in ways were not possible before the Internet.

Virtually everyone has a computer at work and equally may have one or more at home so the need to be become more proficient at working with a computer is more relevant than ever. Even smaller Businesses need to have stronger skills in marketing online and where before the cost of this may have appeared prohibitive it becomes more important to everyone that they develop knowledge around these tools in order to continue to remain relevant in the marketplace.

Schools have been teaching ICT for many years but even this with the pace of change in technology does not fully equip students with the relevant skills they need to perform well in life. Indeed much of the education given to children is not truly relevant to the real life skills these young students will need in the future. It is important therefore that we develop in ourselves and in our children the right skillset to both remain relevant and protect oneself against the growing pressures and demands of modern life.
