Old Dog New Tricks

When was the last time you learnt something new? It may only have been a small thing. Like learning to upgrade your phone or installing an App on your tablet. Or you may be the other type of person who buys all the latest gizmos and keeps up to date with the latest features of Android Lollipop. Chances are though, the new thing you learnt was probably tech related.

For some, the thought of retuning the Digital set-top box or setting up the new widescreen TV without some kind of science degree is a daunting task. Yet more and more, we are faced with these kind of 'technology challenges' on a regular basis. Where some of us have a natural aptitude for these things, others do not.
For many of us, our years of learning finished when we left school or university and the expectation was that we had learnt all of the skills we would need to carry us through life. For years, we may have not considered the need to upgrade our skills but for most of us, getting to grips with the new Finance System at work or transferring our contacts to a new mobile phone is a necessary life skill these days.

While you may not know your 4G from your WiFi or your tweets from your pokes, there is no getting around the need to become more technically literate these days. Most large businesses have moved their customer services to an online platform and its rarely possible these days to just pick up the phone and speak to a nice lady who can help you with your problem.

Amongst certain groups, cases of 'Tech Rage' are prevalent where the increasing reliance on technology creates deep frustration for those who struggle to get to grips with the ever changing world. For some, the pace of change is uncomfortable, leaving them with a sense of 'one step forward, two steps back' as no sooner have they mastered how to send a text from their new device then they are required to upgrade to a newer version of the software and it all looks different again.

Fortunately, help is at hand for those who are prepared to take the leap of faith and find the information they need through YouTube or Google Groups. For many, having discovered the nugget of wisdom they have been searching for, so swelled with self-satisfaction are they that they become the ambassador for the new ways and offer to assist those around them with their technical difficulties.

The answer it appears is to train, little and often which then brings about more confidence in handling these challenges and meaning you get more out of these expensive devices we are told we need rather than them being a source of loathing and constant frustration.
