Money is Power?

What is the correct way to measure the wealth of a man?

The amount of gold he possesses? How many livestock? The money he has in the bank?  Is it the material things that a man owns that which defines his success? I'm sure that there are many of you that would agree with some of these questions.

It is true, that we have been taught that 'Money is Power' and that Man has put great effort into obtaining and stockpiling the things that make them wealthy. Our ancestors put great stock into collecting rare stones and ores as they possess great value. Is it as relevant now as it used to be as to how many 'things' one owns?

Nowadays is it not fairer to say 'Information Is Power'? Isn't it more relevant these days, that having the right knowledge and information at hand is what brings real advantages in life? Aren't the really successful people in this world experts in their own fields? Possessor of some additional knowledge or information that gives them the 'Key advantage'. Isn't that the real definition of success?

Being part of an 'online' culture gives us instant access to huge tracts of information and for most people this is readily available at their fingertips. When you last needed to know something. When was the last time you went to look in an encyclopaedia or dictionary? Didn't you just 'Google it'? Decided to buy something recently? Did you look in a catalogue or did you find reviews for it on YouTube? Of course, if you never venture online to research things then you are one of the few who aren't and most younger people have grown up getting their info online. It's free, quick and usually pretty accurate.

So, if you want to try a bit of cooking. Don't you get your recipe from a website or even watch it being prepared on Vimeo? What if you needed to know how to get that bit of the Hoover out without breaking it? People are learning new things online every day. There are now complete courses of studies and classes available for you to watch from your smartphone!

Learning anything at home these days is pretty achievable. Fancy a Yoga class? Want to learn Karate? Want to build a website? Want to become a Network Marketer? There are courses for everything. And because they are easy to produce they are regularly updated and current. Are we right to insist that our children learn from books?

Are we correct in having them pass the same tests and exams as we have been doing for the last fifty years? Is what we are teaching our children now right for what they will need for the future? Are we really equipping them with the right stuff?
